Abstract: Motivation, a psychological construct, plays a substantial role in determining the success of students’ learning endeavors. This qualitative study aims to explore the motivational perspective of undergraduate students studying English at private universities in Bangladesh. Data were collected from 21 students pursuing BA (Hons) in English at two private universities in Bangladesh. The research employed semi-structured interviews to explore students’ motivational perspectives and objectives in studying the BA (Hons) in English, which comprises courses on the English language and literature. The findings of the study reveal that learners’ motivational perspectives encompass both intrinsic and instrumental factors. The implications of this study suggest that the insights gained from the findings can provide valuable guidance for tertiary-level teachers and policymakers in designing syllabuses, lesson plans, and course objectives based on students’ motivation. By addressing the students’ motivational needs, stakeholders can enhance the effectiveness of English language and literature education at the tertiary level.
