The Emergence of Sustainable Tourism in Hakaluki Haor

Dipto Ghosh and Md. Abdul Hamid

Abstract: This study explores stakeholder perceptions regarding environmental and ecological issues related to sustainable tourism in Hakaluki Haor. The current study adopted a qualitative approach using Key Informant Interviews (KII) and In-Depth Interviews (IDI) with 30 stakeholders, including local community members, government officials, NGOs, and tourism actors. Data was analyzed through thematic analysis and triangulation to ensure reliability. The findings reveal: (i) significant ecological concerns including biodiversity loss and environmental degradation; (ii) weak governance, poor coordination, and ineffective institutional practices; (iii) strong livelihood dependency shaping cautious or resistant local attitudes; (iv) multiple barriers such as inadequate infrastructure, policy gaps, and socio-economic constraints; and (v) potential for sustainable tourism through community participation, improved governance, and adaptive planning. The study suggests strengthening governance, enhancing community involvement, and promoting sustainable infrastructure and policy support.
